A comemoration service was hosted in the Huddersfield Drill Hall by the Lord lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe, to commemorate the participation of the Yorkshire battalions that fought on the Somme in 1916. These battalions, including the West Riding Regiment, have since been amalgamated into the present day Yorkshire Regiment. Our patron, Dr. Peter Liddle gave the keynote address explaining the significance of the Somme as seen through the historian’s eyes. Additionally, there were readings from letters and a Drumhead service.
