Indexing the Halifax Courier : Major Objective Completed

Back in July 2012 HGWHS began its first major project. The project aim was to index the war related content of the Halifax Courier Weekly from August 1914 to November 1918. This involved identifying all the relevant items, copying them into a visual database and attaching key words so that all the records were searchable. It was intended as a tool for our own research and ultimately for anyone else who wanted to quickly find information from the paper. We knew this was a mammoth task and its completion date was estimated to be sometime in 2016. At the outset we did not know of any other project attempting anything similar so it had to be designed from the ground up. Inevitably we had to make amendments ‘on the hoof ‘including a major change in approach about 18 months in. We are pleased to say that we have now completed the first project aim. There are tasks still to be done such as checking for inconsistencies and putting the data on-line but we now have a base to work from that covers all the war years we intended. Although many people have been involved in the project over the years, Rob Hamilton has co-ordinated it for most of its lifetime and its fair to say that we owe the bulk of indexing to the monumental efforts of Graham Bradshaw (Above) .
Both need congratulating on achieving this landmark.
