July Meeting: Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians by David Glover

In a welcome return by David Glover our July meeting was a tour-de-force of the story of a Bavarian princess whose family was fighting“on the other side”. In 1914 Elisabeth wholeheartedly supported her brave husband King Albert and her adopted country in their struggle against the Germans. During the Great War, the royal couple stayed in a tiny free corner of occupied Belgium, where Elisabeth visited the front lines, and, having pawned her jewels, sponsored a nursing unit, in which she herself worked. A tale of great courage and endurance.
